Destin vs. 30A: Which Gulf Coast Beach Is Right for You?

March 2026 • 7 min read

If you're planning a Gulf Coast beach trip in Northwest Florida, you've probably narrowed it down to two options: Destin or Scenic Highway 30A (Rosemary Beach, Seaside, Alys Beach, etc.). Both have stunning white sand and emerald water — but the vibes are dramatically different.

As hosts in Destin, we obviously love our town. But we'll give you an honest comparison so you can pick the right fit for your trip.

Beaches

Both are stunning — same sugar-white sand, same emerald-green Gulf water. The difference is access and atmosphere.

Destin has more developed public beach accesses with parking, restrooms, and amenities (Henderson Beach State Park, James Lee Park, Crystal Beach). You can also boat to Crab Island — the famous sandbar — which is something 30A simply doesn't have.

30A beaches tend to be less crowded, with a more remote feel. Grayton Beach State Park is often ranked as one of the best beaches in America. The coastal dune lakes (like Western Lake at Grayton) are unique to this stretch of coast and stunning.

Winner: Depends on what you want. Destin for variety and Crab Island. 30A for solitude and natural beauty.

Restaurants & Dining

Destin wins on volume and variety. The Destin Harbor area alone has 20+ restaurants, from no-frills fish shacks (Dewey Destin's) to upscale waterfront (Boshamps, Jackacudas). Along Hwy 98, you'll find every type of cuisine plus great family chains. Destin also has the harbor fish markets where you can buy straight-off-the-boat catches.

30A has excellent dining, but in a different style — boutique restaurants, farm-to-table spots, and the famous Airstream food trucks at Seaside. Great Thai Eatery in Rosemary Beach and George's at Alys Beach are standouts. Prices tend to be higher, and reservations are more essential.

Winner: Destin for seafood variety and value. 30A for the curated, boutique dining experience.

Activities & Things to Do

Destin dominates here. Deep sea fishing charters, dolphin cruises, pontoon boat rentals, Big Kahuna's Water Park, Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, Destin Commons shopping, HarborWalk Village, snorkeling at the jetties — the list goes on. There's always something to do, rain or shine.

30A is more about slowing down. Bike the 19-mile paved path along the coast, browse art galleries in Seaside, kayak the coastal dune lakes, or just read a book on a quiet beach. It's intentionally less commercialized.

Winner: Destin for families and active travelers. 30A for people who want to unplug.

Budget

Destin is notably more affordable. Vacation rentals, restaurants, and activities all tend to cost less than their 30A counterparts. A week-long rental in Destin might run $1,500-2,500, while a comparable 30A rental (especially in Rosemary or Alys Beach) could be $3,000-5,000+.

Dining follows the same pattern — Destin's casual seafood restaurants are $12-25 per plate; 30A's boutique spots are typically $20-40+.

Winner: Destin, significantly.

Our Honest Verdict

Choose Destin if: You're traveling with family and want tons of activities, waterfront dining, fishing, and a lively atmosphere — at a better price point.

Choose 30A if: You want a quieter, more upscale retreat focused on architecture, nature, biking, and boutique restaurants — and budget isn't the primary consideration.

Pro tip: You can easily do both. Drive to 30A for a day trip from Destin (30-40 minutes) to experience Seaside and Grayton Beach, then come back to your Destin rental.
